Gaelic Games: Monaghan search for new manager after Corey departure

Monaghan senior football manager Vinny Corey has stepped down from his position with the county.

Corey, who had previously served as a selector under his predecessor Seamus McEnaney, took on the job in September 2022 and led them to an All-Ireland semi-final in his first season in charge.

They were beaten narrowly by Dublin in Croke Park that day despite what was widely viewed as a creditable showing, but results were mixed in 2024.

After beating Dublin in the first round of the Allianz League, they would go almost five months without victory, a run that brought relegation from Division One and an Ulster Championship exit at the hands of Cavan in the preliminary round.

Although advancing from the All-Ireland group stage thanks to victory over Meath, they were beaten by eventual finalists Galway in the preliminary quarter-finals.

“Monaghan GAA would like to express its sincere appreciation to Vinny for his unwavering service to Monaghan GAA over the last 22 years, 18 as a player, 2 as a selector and 2 years at the helm as senior manager,” said a statement from the county.

“We are very thankful for Vinny’s outstanding support and commitment to Monaghan GAA over the years and appreciate his contributions made as player, selector & manager.

“Monaghan GAA fully respects Vinny’s decision to step down and wishes him continued success in future endeavours.”

Monaghan are the second Ulster side to now be on the hunt for a new manager after Mickey Harte’s departure from Derry last month.
