Flash floods in Gran Canaria sweep cars into sea | World News

Gran Canaria’s airport has reopened after flash flooding meant planes were unable to take off and land.

Torrential downpours across the island caused widespread disruption – with dramatic footage showing cars being washed off shore.

The town of Telde was particularly hit by the stormy conditions, and several people needed to be rescued from their vehicles.

Spain’s meteorological agency has warned dozens of amber and yellow alerts for heavy rain remain in place elsewhere in the country.

Some parts of Valencia could see 100mm of rainfall in just 12 hours – and a total of more than 400mm between Monday and Thursday this week.

Officials in the hardest-hit areas asked motorists to avoid driving unless “strictly necessary” – and to take extreme caution near riverbeds and ravines.
