A fisherman in his 40s has died after falling overboard from a boat off the coast of County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland.

The incident happened at about 13:25 local time near Arranmore on Tuesday.

Garda (Irish Police) said the man was then airlifted to Sligo University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ has reported the man was not originally from Ireland but had been living in Greencastle, Inishowen, for many years.

A spokesperson for the Department of Transport said the Coast Guard marine rescue coordination centre in Malin responded to a mayday call from the vessel.

The casualty was recovered from the water by the fishing vessel crew, they added.

A technical examination of the vessel has since been carried out and the Marine Casualty Investigation Board and the Health and Safety Authority have been notified.
