Firefighters tackled a late night fire in Glasgow after a tarmacking lorry near the M8 motorway burst into flames.

The incident occurred on New City Road, near Phoenix Road, just after 23:20 on Tuesday night.

Social media posts described hearing “a very loud bang/explosion” near the city centre, followed by huge plumes of smoke, while videos showed fire crews extinguishing the vehicle with water.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it sent three appliances to the scene, and departed about 01:30 after making the area safe.
