Yn ystod y ddeunawfed ganrif, dechreuodd ymchwilwyr gwyddonol archwilio pa fwynau oedd i’w canfod yn nŵr ffynhonnau hynafol. Daethant i’r casgliad bod dyfroedd sawl ffynnon yn cynnwys mwynau defnyddiol fel sylffwr, haearn a magnesiwm – mwynau all fod o fudd wrth drin nifer o faterion iechyd amrywiol gan gynnwys problemau gyda’r croen a phoenau yn y cymalau. Rhoddodd y pwyslais lled-newydd ar fwynau beth hygrededd i rai o hen ffynhonnau Cymru.
O Landrindod i Lanwrtyd, Llanfair-ym-muallt a Llangamarch mae nifer o ffynhonnau mwynol ym Mhowys, ac yn sgil y ffynhonnau arbennig daeth y trefi a’r pentrefi yma’n ganolfannau o bwys i ymwelwyr.
Ym 1760, treuliodd yr hynafiaethydd, Lewis Morris, chwe diwrnod yn Llandrindod yn ceisio gwella. Bu’n yfed y dŵr gyda phob pryd o fwyd ac fe ddaeth yn argyhoeddedig yn ei allu llesol. Yn dilyn ei ymweliad â Llandrindod roedd Morris yn falch o gyhoeddi ei fod bellach yn gallu mynd ar gefn ei geffyl heb gymorth a hynny am y tro cyntaf ers dwy flynedd.
Er bod dŵr Ffynnon Cegin Arthur ym mhlwyf Llanddeiniolen, Gwynedd yn adnabyddus am ei phwerau iachusol ers o leiaf yr unfed ganrif ar bymtheg daeth y ffynnon i amlygrwydd ym 1858 pan gyhoeddodd Dr Arthur Wynn Williams lyfryn yn dadansoddi cynnwys mwynol cyfoethog y dŵr.
Roedd yfed dŵr y ffynnon yr un mor llesol ag ymdrochi yn ôl bob sôn. Mae Dr Williams yn cyfeirio at fochyn a gafodd ei iacháu ar ôl i’w berchennog rhoi diod o ddŵr y ffynnon iddo i’w yfed!
Roedd modd prynu dŵr Ffynnon Cegin Arthur yn lleol hefyd; sefydlwyd cwmni KANSCO (King Arthur’s Natural Springs Company) yng Nghaernarfon i botelu a dosbarthu’r dŵr.
