England v Andorra: Why is the 2026 World Cup qualifier at Villa Park?

England are playing Andorra at Villa Park in Birmingham on Saturday due to Coldplay’s concerts at Wembley.

The Three Lions traditionally play their home matches at the London ground, but Coldplay’s run of concerts at the national stadium has given England an opportunity chance to take the fixture around the country.

Wembley is hosting Coldplay gigs both on Thursday and Saturday.

In recent years, England’s men’s and women’s sides have played select matches across the nation.

England’s friendly against Senegal in June also clashed with concert season, so the match was hosted at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground.

The fixture will be England’s first at Aston Villa’s home ground since February 2005, when the Three Lions drew 0-0 in a friendly with the Netherlands.

England have previously played nine times at Villa Park – winning four, drawing four and losing once.

Speaking earlier this year when Villa Park was confirmed as the venue, England head coach Thomas Tuchel said: “We are excited to play at Villa Park, another stadium full of history.

“I know from my own visits to the stadium this season that it is capable of creating an outstanding atmosphere and is located close to St. George’s Park which is a positive for our preparation.

“We hope to be able to generate another special atmosphere and create a memorable occasion for all fans.”
