An elderly driver has died in hospital after a crash in Orkney.

The 87-year-old’s Volvo V70 was involved in a collision with a Jeep estate on the B9070 road near Sanday Airport just after midday on Friday.

He was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary but died a few hours later.

The driver of the Jeep was not injured. The road was closed for more than 24 hours to allow for investigation work.

Police Scotland Sgt Neil MacDonald offered his sympathies to the family of the man who died, and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

“If you were driving in the area at the time please check any dash-cam you have to see if it has captured anything that could help with our investigation,” he said.
