Dust devil spotted tossing hay around in Lincolnshire field

A dust devil – a small whirlwind resembling a miniature tornado – has been caught on camera at a farm in Lincolnshire.

The weather phenomenon, also known as a “willy willy”, is an upward spiralling dust-filled vortex of air, according to the Met Office.

Tracy White noticed the tail end of the spectacle shortly before 16:00 BST on Sunday at her farm in Asserby, near Alford.

“It looked like it was raining straw through our window so we rushed out to look what was going on. We saw the swirling wind collecting straw in its path,” she said.

Ms White said the last time she saw one was 16 years ago.

Dust devils can range in height from just a few feet to more than 1,000ft (about 300m), with bases several metres wide that narrow upwards before widening again.

Look North weather presenter Katerina Christodoulou said they occurred when there was dry ground and strong sunshine.
