The Irish Prison Service said they reported the incident to An Garda Síochána (Irish police) immediately.

Gardaí (Irish police) said the man – who is in his 40s – absconded in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He remains at large.

Police said he had been getting medical attention.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ said that it was understood the prisoner had been receiving care at the hospital for a number of days.
