A driver has been taken to hospital after a two-car crash on the M1, which led to the motorway being shut in both directions.

Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway between junctions 20 and 21 in Leicestershire shortly after 12:00 BST on Tuesday.

Leicestershire Police said a blue BMW 5 Series collided with a red Ford Mondeo before leaving the carriageway and hitting a tree.

The force said the BMW driver has been taken to hospital and was undergoing treatment for injuries, adding no-one from the Mondeo was injured. The southbound carriageway has since reopened but the northbound closure is still in place and drivers have been asked to avoid the area.

The M1 was closed in both directions between Lutterworth and the M69 at Leicester causing traffic delays for several hours.

National Highways said traffic caught within the northbound closure was being turned around.

The southbound side, which was closed to allow an air ambulance to land on the motorway, has fully reopened.

Police said inquiries at the scene were ongoing.
