The Davis Cup is a team tournament played over the course of a year, affectionately known as the ‘World Cup of tennis’.
It is the largest annual international team competition in world sport and was founded in 1900 by Dwight Davis.
Winning nations from the qualifiers, which take place throughout the year, progress to November’s finals.
Ties in the finals are played as a best of three matches – two singles and one doubles.
Each nation has a team of four or five players and a captain, who decides which players will compete in singles and doubles matches.
The Davis Cup Finals take place in Bologna, Italy, from 18-23 November.
