David Marshall: Hibs keeper retires from playing and takes on new role

Hibernian goalkeeper David Marshall has retired from playing but will continue at the club, working closely with sporting director Malky Mackay.

The former Scotland player, 39, takes on the role of technical performance director at Easter Road.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to work across various different performance departments and to learn from Malky who has years of experience in the game,” said Marshall, who has a Master’s degree in sports directorship.

He joined Hibs from Queens Park Rangers in 2022, having played for four other English clubs and Cardiff City after leaving first club Celtic in 2007.

Internationally, Marshall’s pinnacle was saving Aleksandr Mitrovic’s penalty in the shootout win that sealed Scotland’s place at the Euro 2020 finals and playing all three group games. He retired from Scotland duty in 2022 with 47 caps.

At club level, the Glaswegian racked up 671 appearances and famously helped Celtic defeat Barcelona 1-0 over two legs in a 2004 Uefa Cup tie.

Marshall made 86 appearances for Hibs, captaining the side 39 times.
