Danes and Americans react to US threats against Greenland

People expressed concern and surprise in Copenhagen and the ‘Danish Capital of America’, Solvang, California, as Trump doubled down on his bid to bring Greenland under US control.

Denmark and Greenland’s foreign ministers travelled to Washington for a meeting with US Vice-President JD Vance on Wednesday.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said while the talks were constructive, there remained a “fundamental disagreement” between the two sides and later criticised US President Donald Trump’s bid to buy Greenland.

Although Trump did not rule out the use of force, he said late on Wednesday that he thought something could be worked out with the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

Several European states have sent soldiers to Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, as part of a so-called reconnaissance mission.
