Warrington Wolves second rower Dan Russell says he was enticed to join the club due to Super League’s improvement in quality relative to Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL).
The 29-year-old Papua New Guinea international has joined the Wire ahead of the upcoming 2025 season.
Prior to signing for Warrington, Russell made eight appearances in the NRL over two years with the St George Illwarra Dragons.
“There’s little differences [between Super League and the NRL] but not much. The level over here is great, super talented and tough and it’s getting similar [to the NRL],” he told BBC Radio Merseyside.
“The competition is getting close to the NRL and I can see that. There’s a lot of talent over here now and a lot of young kids coming through and it’s very similar.”
Russell also said his international team-mates, as well as Warrington boss Sam Burgess, sold him on making the move to the northern hemisphere.
“Being in the PNG team for a long time now, there’s a lot of PNG boys over here. They’ve always spoken highly about it and how good the competition is,” he added.
“They helped a lot but when Sam reached out it made the decision quite easy.”
