Cristian Camilo Munoz dies from knee infection six days after crash

Colombian Cristian Camilo Munoz has died from a knee infection following a crash six days ago.

The 30-year-old did not finish the Tour du Jura one-day race in France in which the accident occurred, and was treated by medics following the incident.

He then travelled with his NU Colombia team to Spain for another race, where he was admitted to hospital with a “difficult-to-treat” infection.

Munoz, whose previous teams included World Tour powerhouses UAE Team Emirates, came fourth in the 2024 Colombian Road Race Championships, and won a stage of the under-23 Giro d’Italia in 2018.

His team said: “Today we bid farewell Cristian Munoz, a cyclist who turned every kilometer into a show of passion, discipline and heart.

“[His] death occurred as a result of medical complications arising from the accident he suffered last Saturday.

“Following the crash, Cristian was initially treated at a medical centre, where he received treatment for an injury to his left knee.

“Once the team arrived in Oviedo, Spain, Cristian was examined again at a clinic, where medical staff detected a difficult-to-treat infection that required further specialist care.

“His condition deteriorated and, despite all the efforts of the medical team, Cristian passed away on Friday morning.”

Safety in road racing has been called into question following a number of fatalities and serious injuries.

Switzerland’s Muriel Furrer died after crashing in the 2024 Road World Championships women’s junior race, going undetected in undergrowth for more than an hour before being discovered by organisers.

In 2023 another Swiss, Gino Mader, died following a high-speed crash on a descent during the Tour de Suisse.

Cycling’s governing body the UCI introduced a number of new safety protocols the same year to try to mitigate the high risks for riders and spectators in a sport which takes place on public roads.
