Flames at the former school took hold on Friday night

Firefighters have returned to the site of a blaze which broke out at a former additional needs school in East Dunbartonshire.

The Campsie View School building on Boghead Road in Lenzie was destroyed by the fire which took hold at about 22:50 on Friday.

A number of residents in the surrounding area were evacuated from their homes, but have since been allowed to return.

Crews brought the flames under control and left the scene on Saturday, but two fire engines returned on Sunday following reports of smoke.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said crews are working to extinguish remaining hot spots.

Footage taken on Friday night showed the building completely engulfed in flames.

Police closed Spruce Drive, Heather Drive, Heather Place and Boghead Road while crews battled the flames – all have since reopened.

The force said inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

There were no reported injuries.

The school and nursery at Campsie View catered to children and young people with additional support needs and had about 100 pupils at a time.

It was absorbed into the new Woodland View Primary School in August 2023.
