Couple arrested after scaling Empire State Building in apparent marriage proposal | US News

A couple have been arrested after scaling the Empire State Building in an apparent marriage proposal.

The pair, identified as Russian climbers Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, were dressed in black and wearing masks as they unfurled a banner that read: “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.”

After spending several minutes on the antenna atop the 1,454ft (443m) New York structure, they climbed down to a lower section where one of them got down on one knee in what appeared to be a proposal.

The two, who were the subject of a 2024 Netflix documentary titled Skywalkers: A Love Story, could then be seen hugging and kissing.

Police body camera footage showed an officer greeting the couple, who did not appear to be wearing safety harnesses, before explaining that “you can’t be up here”.

An off-camera voice can then be heard replying with what sounds like: “We are engaged.”

Moments later, officers reached a landing within the antenna and met the couple, who were coming down a ladder and calmly spoke with police, the video showed.

It was not immediately clear how the pair had gained access to the Empire State Building’s antenna, which rises well above the public areas of the 102-storey structure.

A spokesperson for the building said in a statement that the stunt was “unauthorised” but did not endanger anyone in the skyscraper.

Onlookers watched the event unfold from the streets below, with one witness, Jonathan Roman, saying: “It’s crazy – it’s like being in the movies.”

Climbers have previously scaled the antenna and other parts of the Empire State Building, however, in most cases, those have also been unauthorised.

In 2023, actor and musician Jared Leto became the first person to legally scale the structure, according to the Empire State Building’s website.

Leto was permitted to climb up to the base of the antenna from the 86th floor as part of the promotion for the 2024 world tour of his band, 30 Seconds to Mars.
