Warwickshire crushed Glamorgan by an innings and 257 runs as they skittled the hosts for just 65 after running up a massive first-innings lead of 322.

The title-chasing Bears’ accurate seam bowling was too much for Glamorgan, with Ed Barnard taking 5-13 as the hosts lost their last nine wickets for a paltry 23 runs.

The home batting fell apart in crushing fashion for the second time in the match as their dismal form since the resumption of the Championship got even worse.

The Bears batted solidly down the order for their first innings of 391, with Sam Hain making 76 and Barnard reaching 51, adding to Will Young’s earlier 60.

The early win put the pressure on Warwickshire’s Division One rivals Somerset and Nottinghamshire with two rounds left.

Resuming on 154-3, Warwickshire made solid progress in their efforts to turn the screw despite losing Vansh Jani for 28, bowled by Timm van der Gugten with a ball that nipped back to hit the top of middle stump.

Hain and Barnard added 86 with Hain looking set for his second century in a largely untroubled knock before edging Mason Crane to slip.

Crane troubled Kai Smith early on, but it was Glamorgan’s third spinner, Kiran Carlson, who removed Barnard just after he had reached a 72-ball half-century, the quickest of the three Bears batters to the landmark.

Chris Woakes started strongly, passing 7,000 first-class runs, before being caught behind off van der Gugten’s third delivery with the new ball- which Glamorgan delayed taking by two overs.

Wicket-keeper Smith, 21, did his best to shepherd the visitors to a fourth batting point with an unbeaten 49 but ran out of partners, after some confusion over tactics from both sides with nine wickets down.

Glamorgan’s second innings began badly with teenage debutant Jack Hope-Bell getting off a pair before edging Chris Woakes to slip.

Asa Tribe (27) and Carlson took the score to 42 before four wickets fell in successive overs to leave the hosts in utter disarray.

Tribe was leg-before to Barnard, Carlson went the same way – playing no shot to Hannon-Dalby – Ingram edged Barnard to slip and Hannon-Dalby yorked Kellaway.

Barnard and Manav Suthar then rampaged through the lower order, with the former finishing with match figures of eight for 18 while the Indian spinner took three wickets without conceding a run.

The last four wickets fell without addition to emphasise the scale of Warwickshire’s dominance.

Warwickshire continue their title chase as they next travel to Essex starting on Tuesday, 15 September, while a shell-shocked Glamorgan must try to restore some pride when they visit Surrey on the same date.
