County Championship: Middlesex seamers rout Glamorgan

Ul Hassan led Glamorgan’s solid progress in the first session after being put in, reaching his half century off 82 balls in the final over before lunch with little hint of the difficulties to come.

He survived a close lbw shout from Paterson on six, but the veteran South African seamer got his reward for a testing opening spell when Eddie Byrom slashed at a wide one and was caught behind for 18.

Sam Northeast, on his return to the venue where he set a ground record of 335 not out last year, added 68 with Ul Hassan before being caught behind for 27 from a fine Paterson delivery in his second spell.

That sparked the visitors’ collapse as three wickets fell in successive overs for the third innings in a row – Roland-Jones having Kiran Carlson caught behind for four and Ul Hassan caught at slip, either side of Colin Ingram nicking through to Jack Davies for one off Henry Brookes.

Higgins joined in the bowlers’ fun as he moved one past Chris Cooke’s defence and had Timm van der Gugten caught at slip.

Slow left-armer Gohar claimed two quick wickets either side of tea but 21-year-old Kellaway farmed the bowling maturely and judged his attacking shots well to move to a deserved half-century with his eighth boundary, before Roland-Jones wrapped up the innings under the lights.

Middlesex were left a potentially tricky evening spell to negotiate, but Stevie Eskinazi and Nathan Fernandes started steadily and put the odd bad ball away, despite a couple of decent lbw shots from Ned Leonard against Eskinazi.

A stray fox running around the perimeter failed to disturb the openers’ concentration as the home side strengthened their grip on the battle of the bottom two sides.
