County Championship: How often does a team forfeit an innings?

Middlesex became the first County Championship side in two years to forfeit an innings during their match against Derbyshire earlier this week.

In a rain-affected four-day match at the County Ground in Derby, no play took place on day one or day three of the match.

When Derbyshire were bowled out for 131 in their first innings on day four, Middlesex opted to forfeit their first innings in a bid to accelerate the match.

Derbyshire scored 111-3 in their second innings before the match ended on day four. Middlesex did not bat in the duration of the match that only saw 86.1 overs of play across four days.

It is the first time a team has forfeited an innings in the County Championship since September 2024, where Gloucestershire and Glamorgan both forfeited an innings each in their match at Cardiff.

It is also only the third time in County Championship history where one team has batted twice, and their opponents have not batted at all, in a fixture.

The previous instances were between Durham and Middlesex in June 1993 and between Derbyshire and Middlesex in July 1988.

It is the 255th occasion where an innings in the County Championship has been forfeited.

Traditionally, it happens when weather has limited how much play can take place, with teams sometimes agreeing to both forfeit an innings in order to accelerate the chances of a result.

In January 2000, South Africa and England both forfeited an innings during a Test match at Centurion after days two, three and four of the match were lost due to rain. It was the first time in Test cricket history that both teams had forfeited an innings.

England chased down their target of 249 in 76 overs to win by two wickets. However, it was later discovered that then South Africa captain Hansie Cronje had engineered the double declaration as part of a match-fixing scandal.
