County Championship: Bailey puts Lancs on top against Glamorgan

Glamorgan brought in leg-spinner Mason Crane and seamer Ned Leonard for Andy Gorvin and Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando, while Lancashire included left-arm spinner Tom Hartley and seamer Jack Blatherwick for Arav Shetty and Sir James Anderson, who picked up a side strain against Middlesex.

Stand-in skipper Josh Bohannon, the fourth Red Rose captain of the campaign, called correctly and had immediate reward as Tom Bailey bowled Zain Ul Hassan behind his legs first ball as the struggling opener missed a leg glance.

Blatherwick had Asa Tribe (8) caught behind and first change George Balderson claimed the big wickets of Kent-bound Glamorgan captain Sam Northeast, lbw for 20, and Colin Ingram, bowled for 13.

Kiran Carlson reached his 1,000 runs for the season when he moved on to 22, cutting Hartley for three, but was given out lbw to Balderson for 34.

Billy Root, in only his third Championship match of the season was caught behind for 10 off Balderson and Lancashire had made the most of the new ball to claim two bowling points by lunch, when Glamorgan were 114-6.

Chris Cooke, who had got going with four fours in an over off Tom Aspinwall, chipped in with 37 before he was leg-before to Bailey but a resolute stand of 82 between Van der Gugten and Mason Crane gave Glamorgan some respectability- helped by Lancashire’s reluctance to post a third man.

Both played sensibly as the score was doubled in the afternoon session for the loss of just two more wickets, van der Gugten going lbw to Balderson for 53 just before the break and Crane being bowled by Bailey for 42 just afterwards.

James Harris (13 not out) and Ned Leonard (12) ensured one batting point before Bailey yorked Leonard to complete his five-for.

Van der Gugten made his usual economical start with the ball and batting did not look easy, but Jennings took advantage of anything loose with nine boundaries, and partner Luke Wells (16 not out) was happy to see out the day to consolidate Lancashire’s advantage.
