A controlled explosion has been carried out at a park in Derbyshire after reports that ammunition had been found nearby.

Derbyshire Police said officers were called to Elm Avenue, in Sandiacre, on Sunday over the reports of the ammunition discovery.

A cordon was put in place and a number of homes in the area were evacuated while the item was safely secured, the force added.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit of the Army then destroyed the item in a controlled explosion at West Park in Long Eaton.

“People living nearby may have heard a loud bang but we would like to reassure them that there is no reason to be alarmed,” a police spokesperson said.

“Residents who were asked to temporarily leave their homes have since been allowed to return.”

Police have not elaborated on the nature of the item, nor specified the number of homes evacuated.
