Christmas: What presents London’s children opened in 1952

In 2024, the Christmas lists for London’s children often feature the most up to date, and expensive items, like smartphones, games consoles, smart tablets, designer clothing and accessories.

But go back 72 years to 1952, the offering was a lot more simple with train sets, toy dogs and a miniature replica of the Coronation procession as the presents of choice.

Ahead of Christmas that year, BBC Television Newsreel presenter Jean Metcalfe explained to viewers what was on offer that year.
