Christmas in the golden age of department stores

Long before the rise of online shopping, this footage captures Christmas during the golden age of department stores.

In December 1978, the BBC filmed a busy day at Binns in Hull, as shoppers flocked to buy their last-minute gifts.

Many of the most popular presents are still with us today, from Scalextric sets to Estee Lauder perfume – and even Kerplunk.

The Binns name later disappeared from the high street, while the Hull store, which became House of Fraser, closed its doors for the final time in 2019.

Listen to highlights from Hull and East Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North or tell us about a story you think we should be covering here, external.
