Sunderland legend Charlie Hurley has died at the age of 87.

The defender was named the club’s player of the century in 1979 and made a total of 401 appearances for the Wearsiders between 1957 and 1969.

He also won 40 caps for Republic of Ireland and later went on to manage Reading.
