Cameron Burgess: Swansea City defender suffers ruptured Achilles

Swansea City have suffered a heavy eve-of-season blow after scans revealed centre-back Cameron Burgess has suffered a ruptured Achilles.

Swansea say Burgess faces surgery and a “significant spell on the sidelines” after he limped off during their EFL Cup defeat to Birmingham City last weekend.

It may be that the 30-year-old misses the entire 2026-27 Championship campaign, though that depends on how well he recovers.

Burgess played every minute of league football last season after joining Swansea in the summer of 2025.

The Australia international, who featured at this summer’s World Cup, was a mainstay of Swansea’s defence alongside captain Ben Cabango.

In his absence, summer signing Stephen Welsh and academy product Filip Lissah are contenders to start at centre-back when Swansea begin the new league campaign at Stoke City on Saturday.

But the expectation is that the Swans will aim to recruit at least one more central defender before the transfer window closes.
