British surfer rides potentially record-breaking monster wave

Laura Crane, a 30-year-old surfer from Devon, hopes she has made it into the record books after potentially riding the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman.

Crane took on the wave at the Nazare Big Wave Challenge in Portugal on Saturday.

The current world record sits at 73.5ft (22.4m) high, and the wave is currently being assessed by the Big Wave Challenge group, which works alongside Guinness World Records.

Speaking to the BBC, Crane said she had “never seen a wave that big” before, and it came as “a big shock”.
