Boy, 17, appears in court after three girls killed in Southport

The defendant was wearing a grey tracksuit made of sweatshirt material and kept his face covered throughout the five-minute hearing.

Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, died after the attack on Hart Street, just before midday on Monday.

Eight children and two adults were also seriously injured.

Unrest broke out on Tuesday night in the Merseyside town hours after a vigil was held to honour the victims.

The town’s MP, Patrick Hurley, said the disturbance close to a mosque, which saw officers pelted with bricks and a police van set on fire, had been “horrific”.

Five men were arrested after a police van was set alight and bricks were thrown, with 53 police officers injured.
