Ben Davies: Castleford Tigers send loanee back to St Helens

Castleford Tigers head coach Danny McGuire has confirmed centre Ben Davies has returned to St Helens as he felt conflicted about playing against his parent club.

The 24-year-old joined the Tigers on a two-week loan earlier this month and played in the opening weekend defeat by Hull KR.

At the time of his arrival, Castleford said: “If his initial loan period is extended, Davies is available to play against his parent club Saints in round two.”

McGuire told BBC Radio Leeds: “It was a strange one. We had him on a two-week loan, and he had the opportunity to stay and play against Saints, and he wasn’t quite comfortable with the situation. I get that.”

He added: “We can’t afford to have anyone in the environment who isn’t 100% in, and he had some doubts about playing against his team-mates and then maybe being back there the week after, so I took it out of his hands, and he’s gone back to St Helens.

“It’s not an ideal situation, but he was good for us while he was here.”
