A Belfast takeaway has been fined after environmental health officers found an active cockroach infestation on its premises.

Ginger Garlic Ltd, on Donegall Road, was fined £1,500 at Belfast Magistrates’ Court and ordered to pay £264 in legal costs.

The prosecution was taken by Belfast City Council following a routine hygiene inspection in September 2024.

The takeaway was given a rating of one, indicating that major improvement was necessary to comply with food hygiene requirements.

Belfast City Council officers found Ginger Garlic Ltd was not kept clean or maintained to an acceptable standard.

The business agreed to close voluntarily.

It re-opened when officers were satisfied sufficient measures had been taken to remove any imminent risk to public health.
