A suspicious object believed to be an “improvised grenade” has been discovered during a security alert in south Belfast, police have said.
Officers remain at a property in the Empire Street area of the city on Thursday as a security alert continues, but police have said that the scene has been reduced.
Police said residents who were moved from their homes on Wednesday have since been allowed to return home after the object was made safe and removed.
A man, aged in his 50s, who was arrested as part of the investigation on Wednesday remains in custody as police enquiries continue.
