Beach danger warning after 6ft hole dug in sand in Polzeath

Beachgoers have been warned of the dangers of digging giant holes in the sand after a 6ft (2m) deep hole was dug near a cafe.

Polzeath Beach Rangers warned anyone falling into the hole could have been seriously injured or suffocated.

They said they were “shocked” adults “stood by” for several hours as the pit was dug.

“Thankfully, the sand didn’t dry out, and the walls stayed firm enough for long enough to prevent a collapse followed by crushing and/or suffocation of the little people,” the group said on Facebook, external.
