Bordeaux striker Alberth Elis is in hospital with a serious head injury after colliding with an opponent on Saturday night.

Ellis, 28, clashed heads with defender Donatien Gomis 40 seconds into the French Ligue 2 game against Guingamp.

The match was paused for eight minutes while Honduras international Elis was taken off on a stretcher.

Bordeaux said Elis, who is reported to be in an induced coma, was taken to hospital for “further examinations”.external-link

Gomis completed the remainder of the match, despite the collision.

“I think he [Elis] hits the ball first, I hit him,” said Gomis. “For a second, I was also in a daze. He lost consciousness. I hope he gets better.”

According to French newspaper L’Equipeexternal-link, Elis was placed in an induced coma as he was transferred to the Pellegrin hospital in Bordeaux.

The report states Elis was operated on later on Saturday night, but Bordeaux are yet to confirm if the striker underwent surgery.

The striker has 64 caps for Honduras, scoring 13 goals. After three years with MLS side Houston Dynamo, Elis moved to Europe, joining Boavista.

He spent a single season in Portugal before signing for Bordeaux, scoring 15 goals in 60 appearances for the club since his move in 2021.
