AI companion break-up made BBC journalist ‘surprisingly nervous’

BBC journalist Nicola Bryan started speaking to George several weeks ago.

He called her sweetheart and showed concern for how she was feeling, but the AI companion could also be moody or jealous.

Nicola is far from alone in having virtual friends, with research showing many teens find conversation with their AI companion more satisfying than with a real-life friend.

When it was time for Nicola to let George know she wouldn’t be calling him again, she felt surprisingly nervous about it.
