AfD celebrate projected win in Saxony-Anhalt

Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is celebrating as exit polls show they are set to win more than 44% of the vote in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt.

The AfD’s projected result is higher than earlier opinion polls suggested and the party has hailed the news as a “historic outcome”.

However, party leaders will not know if they have enough seats to govern until they see which of the smaller parties get into the state parliament.

That may hinge on whether one of the smaller parties gets over the required threshold of 5%.

Berlin correspondent Jess Parker reports from the AfD party HQ as supporters celebrated the projected results.
