A man walking around the coast of Australia was surprised with a call from the actor whose soap character inspired his epic charity challenge for motor neurone disease (MND) charities.

Billy Whiston is pushing a wheelchair for 8,948 miles (14,400km) after being inspired by Peter Ash’s portrayal of Paul Foreman in Coronation Street, who had MND.

The 25-year-old, from Glossop in Derbyshire, was treated to a call from the soap star, who described Billy’s challenge as “incredible”.

Billy set off on 3 March and aims to complete the challenge in the space of a year.
