People in Aberdeen are being warned about fake QR codes appearing on parking ticket machines in the city.

When scanned the codes link to a fraudulent payment page designed to look like the website of operator PayByPhone.

Aberdeen City Council said the matter had been reported to Police Scotland.

The local authority added it does not have QR codes on any of its payment machines.

A spokesperson said: “Recent scams have seen fake QR codes placed on parking signage and meters that once scanned takes the user to fraudulent websites.

“Our city wardens are inspecting machines as part of their patrols and ensuring prompt removal of any QR code identified.”

The public are asked to report these scams to Aberdeen City Council or PayByPhone.
