The NHS East of England Ambulance Service said it also attended and that the air ambulance took the casualty to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, while another man was taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage for further assessment.

Sgt Tim Davies, from the Beds, Cambs and Herts Road Policing Unit, said: “I’m appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or has dashcam footage of it, to make contact as we investigate the circumstances of the incident.

“I can be contacted directly by email, external.”

Diversions were put in place for southbound traffic and National Highways said vehicles were being “released from the rear of the queue. Road users are advised to wait until they are instructed to turn”.
