Two held after child dies in crash near Birmingham play area

Two men, aged 21 and 24, were taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs, police said.

“We’re in the early stages of our investigation but we believe a grey Mercedes was in close proximity to the Corsa and we’re currently treating it as a collision involving two cars,” a statement read.

The vehicles and drivers remained at the scene, police added.

Det Sgt Paul Hughes said crash investigators were doing all they could to get answers to what happened.

“A young girl has tragically lost her life and I can only imagine the pain her loved ones are going through at this awful time,” he said.

He added he was particularly keen to speak to anyone with dash cam footage.

He also urged people not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident.

“We need to deal with facts so we can complete a thorough investigation and provide the answers the girl’s family and friends deserve,” he explained.
