Whipsnade Zoo elephant plays ball in time for World Cup

A baby elephant born just in time for the World Cup has been seen playing with a ball in his enclosure, only two days after his arrival.

The male Asian elephant calf was delivered at Whipsnade Zoo on Monday, weighing 110kg (243lb) and measuring 1m (3.3ft) tall.

The Bedfordshire zoo said the new calf brought “real hope” for the future of the endangered species.

Visitors are being offered the chance to name the infant elephant.
