‘My step-brother wants half of my inheritance – but he didn’t share his’

Inheritance can cause families to fall out, and sometimes it can even break relationships.

When a loved one passes away, families should come together. But sadly, money can sometimes make people act in ways that aren’t very nice.

One woman was left feeling upset and confused when her step-brother asked for half of her inheritance.

She said she loves him “dearly” and doesn’t want to argue about this. She does want to give him something, but she thinks half is just “too much”.

She also thinks he’s being unfair, reports the Mirror.

On Mumsnet, the worried woman claimed: “My half-brother who I love dearly wants me to share my inheritance with him, he says my mum told him she would share it half-half. That’s not what she told me. Mum had passed away so we can’t clarify now.”

There’s another reason why the woman doesn’t want to split her inheritance 50/50. She said: “He received an inheritance from his mum that he didn’t share.”

She finished her post by saying: “I’m happy to give him a share but I feel half is too much. I don’t want to fall out with him but I feel it’s unfair.”

In the comments, people were shocked at his nerve. One person said: “He can go f** himself”, and another wrote: “Of course he is going to say that, but he had an inheritance from his own mum and you’ll split whatever your dad leaves evenly. The money from your mum is yours. Why would it have anything to do with him? She wrote her will the way she wanted it. That’s the end of it.”

Someone else was angry: “She wasn’t his mum, why should you share it at all, let alone half of it? “, and another agreed: “If he didn’t share the inheritance from his mum why would he expect you to share yours? I’d tell him that.”

Some thought he was just trying to get more money, with a comment saying: “How about saying ‘that’s not what she told me, that’s not what’s written in the will and that’s not the precedent you set with your mum’s inheritance’? “.
