A man has died after a car hit two pedestrians on a Birmingham street, before driving away.

It happened on Soho Road near the junction with Whitehall Road at about 11:20 GMT. Emergency services said the man, in his 50s, died at the scene, while a woman in her 40s sustained leg injuries.

“The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, and we are continuing our work to locate him,” said West Midlands Police.

A Vauxhall Corsa involved in the incident was later recovered nearby.

Police added the road was expected to remain closed “for some time” on Tuesday and motorists were asked to avoid the area where possible.

The West Midlands force said its thoughts were with everyone who knew the man, and it had specially trained officers supporting his family “at this tragic time”.

The woman remained in hospital with leg injuries, it said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands Police on 101 quoting incident number 1819.
