Runaway driver caught by CCTV after crash

Police were able to use CCTV to find a disqualified driver who ran from the speed of a high-speed crash.

Jamie Challis, 24, had been driving a Volkswagen Polo at speeds of up to 70mph (113kmh) before a collision in Newport with another car and then a lamppost, which ripped open a rear door and threw a 22-year-old man onto the road.

As a manhunt began, officers tracked down grainy CCTV footage, showing the suspect making his escape through a nearby housing estate.

The breakthrough came when they traced the car to a local pub, where cameras had also captured the group in the hours before the crash.
