A group of kayakers say they had an “incredible surprise” when a curious dolphin swam beside them as they paddled under the Forth Rail Bridge.

The group captured footage of the mammal in the Firth of Forth near Inchgarvie Island on Saturday.

It interacted with several of the kayaks and even popped its head up to have a look at them for about 20 minutes.

One of the kayakers, Hugo Foley, told the BBC the experience was “an incredible reminder of how lucky we are to share these waters with such amazing wildlife”.

After filming the moment on his phone, he posted the video on social media and the clip garnered more than 500,000 views.

Mr Foley said: “People have loved seeing this unexpected wildlife encounter right on our doorstep.

“We were stunned in the best way possible when the unexpected visitor, interacted and swam in between us all.

“It was an incredible surprise, the dolphin appeared alongside our kayaks for a short while before heading back out toward the Firth of Forth.

“We frequently spot seals in the area, but dolphin sightings are very rare, so this was a really special moment for everyone involved.”
