Manchester United defender Lenny Yoro was spotted kicking off Lille’s Ligue 1 fixture against Paris St-Germain on Sunday as part of a ceremony.
The 19-year-old started in defence for the Red Devils in a 2-0 win against Sunderland on Saturday, but 24 hours later was wearing a Lille shirt and jeans on the pitch at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
It is common in the French top-flight for clubs to do a ceremonial kick-off before their matches, similar to a first pitch in baseball.
The match officially started when former Arsenal and France striker Olivier Giroud got the game under way, with Lille going on to earn a 1-1 draw.
In September, former Senegal international striker Mamadou Niang kicked off the game between two of his former clubs Strasbourg and Marseille.
In 2018, a young Marseille fan went viral when he kicked off, beat Rennes defenders, and scored past the goalkeeper before taking his shirt off and celebrating in front of the home fans.
Yoro started his career at Lille, making 46 league appearances in France before completing a £52m move to Old Trafford in July 2024.
Sunday presented an opportunity for Yoro to return to his former club before joining up with France under-21s on international duty.
In a social media post, Lille said: “It is great to have you with us tonight, Leny.”
