Super Rygbi Cymru: RGC upset the odds at Pontypool

Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC) stunned Pontypool with an impressive 23-14 win on the road in Super Rygbi Cymru (SRC).

The north Walians became the first side to beat Pooler on their home turf in the league since Llandovery in the opening round of last season.

Pontypool started well to lead 8-0 thanks to a try by wing Walker Price and a Kieran Meek penalty.

However, the north Walians led 10-8 at the break thanks to a try by blind-side flanker Daf Thirsk from a driving lineout and the boot of Billy McBryde.

The kickers traded penalties but the key score came when GB rugby sevens speedster Caio Parry hacked a loose ball on, gathered and crossed for a try that McBryde converted.

RGC won only once on their travels last season, against Swansea in December.

Champions Newport suffered a second defeat of the campaign after going down 28-24 at Aberavon.

The Wizards, who lost at SRC Challenger Shield holders Ebbw Vale on the opening weekend, withstood a late charge by the Black and Ambers that at least earned a pair of consolation bonuses.

Last season’s runners-up Ebbw Vale continued their strong start to the bid to go one better by beating Bridgend 34-17.

The Steelmen top the table with a perfect 12 points with Llandovery, the only other side to have won both games, two points behind in second.

The Drovers won a thriller against Swansea 34-31 at Church Bank thanks to a last-gasp kick.

It was a similar story when the second round started on Thursday night thanks to Elis Price’s penalty earning Carmarthen Quins a 36-33 victory against Cardiff at the Arms Park.
