Great Britain’s Innes Fitzgerald completed a long-distance double as she won the 3,000m at the European Under-20 Championships.

The 19-year-old from Devon added the crown to the 5,000m title she won on Thursday as she aims for a place at this month’s World Championships in Tokyo.

Fitzgerald – who was third in the British Championships at 5,000m – took the European Under-20 3,000m title in a time 0f 8:46.39 – more than 22 seconds ahead of Sweden’s silver medallist Carmen Cernjul.

The time in the Finnish town of Tampere broke the 32-year-old championship record.

It comes after she broke Zola Budd’s European Under-20 5,000m record last month.

Fitzgerald – who is next planning to race at next week’s Diamond League meeting in Brussels – is still awaiting to see if she will be selected for the British team for the 5,000m in Tokyo.

Having finished outside the top two at the UK Championships – which would guarantee her place at the event – she must wait to see if she is given a third slot available to selectors.
