Newgrange in County Meath is one of Ireland’s most famous sites, home of an ancient passage tomb that’s older than the Great Pyramid of Giza.
More than 5,000 years old, the inner chamber of the tomb famously lights up during the winter solstice, when sunlight penetrates the passage – indicating an ancient understanding of astronomy.
For many years, it was believed burial at the site was the preserve of kings and the elite of society.
But new research suggests people were chosen for different reasons, rather than simply being considered a dignitary.
