County Championship: Glamorgan enjoy solid opening day against Derbyshire

Tribe, playing his first match of the season in place of Eddie Byrom, drove classically in a perky half-century off 65 balls including 10 fours, as he gave the impetus to the opening stand of 93.

Tickner was the tightest of the Derbyshire seamers, bowling to the grassier end of the pitch, but it was Reece who did the damage in his second spell as Ul Hassan top-edged a pull to mid-wicket for 32 and Tribe drove down the wrong line.

Reece then limped off for the second match running, this time with what looked like a hamstring problem.

The third-wicket pair of Northeast and Kiran Carlson started serenely after lunch, their concentration not broken by a pair of amorous gulls on the outfield behind the bowler’s arm.

But Zak Chappell’s short ball ended a stand of 60 when Carlson (35) hooked to fine leg.

The experienced Northeast and Ingram were content to accumulate either side of tea as they added 88.

Ingram struck hard-working spinner Alex Thomson for a straight six but was dropped at cover when he tried to repeat the dose, reining in his instincts after that.

Dal, who replaced spinner Jack Morley in the visitors’ XI, eventually induced a rare error from Northeast who fell lbw after looking in control but hitting just five fours.

The fact that Ingram’s 50 came up off 103 balls showed the difficulty batters had in forcing the pace.

The second new ball brought rewards for Derbyshire as Tickner won an lbw shout against Ben Kellaway (22), before Dal had Chris Cooke caught behind for six.

Ingram survived a difficult chance to slip off Zak Chappell on 70, and Timm van der Gugten kept him company to the close as Glamorgan retained hopes of passing 400 for the first time in 2025.
