Nicholls, who played the most recent of his 56 Tests for the Black Caps against Bangladesh 16 months ago, was also part of the New Zealand side that lost to England in the epic 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s.

“I’m really looking forward to this opportunity with Worcestershire,” he said.

“I’ve always been a fan of county cricket, and to contribute to a team with such a rich history and passionate following is something I’m excited about.”

Nicholls will join his compatriot, fast bowler Jacob Duffy, at New Road as the club’s other overseas signing.

Worcestershire have opened the new season with three away games to allow them time to get their much-flooded ground ready for the season.

After a hard-fought draw against Somerset, the Pears lost heavily to Yorkshire before a narrow defeat against Essex.
